What to Keep, What to Store

As summer winds down, it’s time to give your home a little refresh. But seasonal transitions don’t always mean a full overhaul. You can ease out of summer with easily while making room for the cooler and cozier months ahead.

Here’s what to keep, what to store, and how to organize your space so it still feels elevated and intentional.

What to keep? The lightness

Although autumn calls for richer tones and heavier textures, not everything summery has to go. In fact, some warm-weather elements work really well if styled the right way.

That breezy linen throw you used all summer? Keep it! But layer it with a chunky knit blanket for a textural blend that works well on transitional days. Neutral décor accents are another thing to not put in storage. Pale wood frames, ceramic vases, and rattan trays don’t need to be packed away. Instead, anchor them with deeper colors. Olive greens, rusts, or burnt sienna will do the trick.

What to store? Clear the clutter

Days grow shorter, and we start to spend more time indoors. A visual perspective of calmness becomes important.

Ditch the seasonal patterns. Tropical prints, nautical motifs, and citrus-hued pillows feel out of place once summer fades. Store these in breathable containers to preserve their vibrancy for next year. Also, lightweight rugs. Swap your jute or flatweave rugs for something with a more texture and warmth. Store summer rugs rolled and tied with cotton straps to prevent them from creasing.

Where to store? Use simple storage solutions.

Practicality doesn’t mean sacrificing style. There is a host of storage solutions to choose from that will keep you home organized and beautiful during the seasonal shift.

Use woven baskets with lids. Chose natural materials like seagrass or water hyacinth in lidded styles. They hide clutter, stack easily, and look sculptural when placed near a fireplace or under a console. Storage ottomans are a great pick too.  Swap your coffee table for a padded storage ottoman. It’s a cozy addition that hides summer throws, books, and even beach gear while doubling as extra seating. Don’t forget the space under your bed!

Hacks for a seamless transition

Label Everything – Especially if you’re tucking away decor in attics or closets. Use linen tags or wood labels for a polished look.

Vertical Space Wins – Use tall baskets or ladder-style shelving to store blankets and throws vertically—it keeps the floor clear and adds visual interest.

Rotate, Don’t Replace – Keep a few key pieces on hand and rotate seasonal ones in and out. It saves space and helps you buy less over time.

The key to end-of-summer styling is embracing simplicity. Instead of clearing the slate, edit what you have, add a few cozy layers, and elevate your storage game so your home feels just as thoughtful in September as it did in July.
