NEIGHBORHOOD
Adams Morgan
Vibrancy and diversity are on constant display in Adams Morgan. Residents of this neighborhood can embark on a global eating tour without leaving the city. Myriad shops and boutiques ensure for great shopping, and the main event of the neighborhood – Adams Morgan Day – is celebrated every second Sunday in September. This street festival, full of live music, food samples and entertainment, showcases the eclectic nature of the community. The neighborhood is home to one of the oldest farmers’ markets in the city.
It is easy to characterize the area’s housing as being much like its neighbors, lined with row houses and mid-sized apartment buildings. And it’s true. But the western section of the neighborhood has an attractive selection of row homes, and gracious apartment buildings are studded throughout the area. It also has a remarkable selection of small condo buildings as well.
Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant’s lesser-known tagline is A Village in the City. The neighborhood feels more like several villages. The first, centered around the neighborhood’s main drag, Mount Pleasant Street, is lined with restaurants of various flavors and price points, discount stores and dive bars. The second village is comprised of a cluster of several apartment and condo buildings, inhabited by long-time residents and recent move-ins. The third is the neighborhood’s western section, sloping side streets lined with beautiful row houses and a few detached homes that have steadily increased in value over the last decade.
The neighborhood has become one of the city’s most desirable areas for the millennial set as the neighborhoods to its west and south have gotten prohibitively expensive. The area is also fairly quiet as only a small proportion of roads lead out of the neighborhood, which means most streets don’t get much traffic. Housing is comprised of two and three-story row homes built in the early 1900s, including a number of Victorians. Many come with gardens and large porches.
