NEIGHBORHOOD
Shirlington
Sometimes known as the heart and soul of the entertainment area of Arlington, Shirlington is a must for those looking for things to do, including some of the best artisan shops, local restaurants, and cafes. It's a pedestrian promenade perfect for meeting friends and catching dinner on the way out of the city after a day of work at the Pentagon. It's also close to Washington National Airport and the award-winning theater company WETA.
Many of the homes in Shirlington were built in the 1940s and later in the 1980s. You'll find this neighborhood in the southern portion of Arlington vibrant and full of life, with welcoming tree-lined streets. It's one of the more affordable locations in the city for homes, though that depends on the size and style. Larger homes exist, but many condos and apartments dot the landscape here, too.
Fairlington
Farlington, a community of over 10,000 people, is just off I-395 providing excellent access to the surrounding areas. It's included in the Arlington County School District, with Abingdon Elementary School in the heart of the city. The neighborhood is noted for its numerous condo-style apartments, some of which date back to the 1940s and offer outstanding charm. Other homes went up in the years after, offering a range of colonial and rambler styles.
This community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register due to the older architecture and history here, including the notable establishments of the 17th century. It's a busy place with grocery stores, shops, and restaurants. There's live theater each weekend, plus the Four Mile Run and W&OD trails to explore. Residents also benefit from a weekly farmer's market, small shops, and many cafes. Be sure to check out the Fairlington Park and Community Center for area programs.
